Applying for Part-Time Jobs: Resume, Application, or Both?

Are you in the middle of searching for a part-time job? Whether you are a high school or college student looking for a job with flexible hours or if you are a full-time worker who is interested in supplementing your income with a second job, you will soon find job openings that you wish to apply for. Whether you apply in person, via email, or online, you might wonder if it is best to submit a traditional job application, a resume, or both. So which is best?

When deciding whether you should submit the standard run-of-the-mill job application or your resume or both, there are some factors you should take into consideration.

ONLINE APPLICATION

Position: There are some part-time jobs that call for a resume and some where the standard company application will work. For example, lets say that you want to work as a cashier at a local supermarket. You inquire about a job and are told to fill out the printed application and home and bring it back. Since most supermarkets only require a GED, high school education, or someone who is currently in school (basically a basic entry-level part-time job), your standard job application will do.

But lets say that you want to apply for a part-time job working night at an after-hours healthcare clinic as a receptionist. A receptionist, otherwise known as a secretary, performs more detailed tasks than a cashier at a grocery store. Your prior skills, training, and job experience stands a good chance of helping you land the job; therefore, a resume is recommended.

Impression You Want to Create: You should also take into account the impression you want to create. Lets say that you are applying for a manufacturing job online. The company has an online application for you to fill out. With that said, they also enable you to upload a resume. What should you do? It wouldn't hurt to do both; fill out the online application and also attach your resume for uploading. The same is true for printed applications; complete the application and staple your resume to it.

How exactly does this create a good impression? Resumes are standard when it comes to seeking a full-time job, but not necessarily a part-time job. Rarely does a job seeker submit a full-written resume. By doing so, you tend to set yourself apart from the competition. You are one of the few who went above and beyond when applying for the job. Moreover, it is no secret that job skills, training, and education look better when presented on a professional and well-written resume.

So there you have it! If you have the option to submit both a job application and a resume when applying for part-time jobs, go right ahead and do so. However, it is important to note that you should not take any shortcuts. Even if you intend to submit a resume along with your printed or online job application, still fill out that application. Do not take the lazy approach and simply write "see attached resume" at the time because all those above mentioned benefits will fly right out the window.
