Sam Walton, a Medal of Freedom recipient, opened the first Wal-Mart store in Rogers, Arkansas in 1962. Sam believed that consumers were in need of a new type of retail store, and trusted his vision by putting up 95 percent of his own money to open his first store. From this point on, this monster company never looked back. In 1972, they went public and were listed on the New York Stock Exchange, and the company's stock was offered to investors for the first time. Wal-Mart grew at exploding rates during the 1970s and 1980s, with its stock experiencing a 100 percent split eight different times in this twenty year span. In 1983, Wal-Mart was ranked No. 1 amongst its peers for the eighth straight year in a row. 1983 also marked the year of the very first Sam's Club opening. By 1985, this company was employing more than 104,000 associates in 882 stores across the nation.

In 1987, Wal-Mart celebrated their 25th anniversary with 1,198 store locations and sales of .9 billion. They were now employing more than 200,000 associates. They were recognized as the nation's No. 1 retailer in 1990, and moved into the international market in 1991, opening its first store in Mexico City.

President George H.W. Bush awarded Sam Walton with the Medal of Freedom, the highest honor that a civilian can receive for his business and life success. Sam passed away just a few short weeks after that historic day in Wal-Mart history.

Today, Wal-Mart employs more than 2.1 million associates across 8,446 store and club locations. They are serving more than 176 million customers every single year, and are recognized as one of the most successful retailers in the world.

Their Culture:

Wal-Mart is known around the world for helping customers save money so that they can live better. Sam built the business on 3 basic beliefs and values, respect for the individual, service to their customers, and always striving for excellence. Its these values and morals that have helped them become one of the world's most admired companies. Communication is crucial with this company so that they can meet the needs of customers and associates, and their open door policy can be trusted and relied upon by every single one of their associates. They have a "Sundown Rule," meaning that they do not close their doors for the day until all requests have been answered or acknowledged. Whether it is a request from across the nation, or right down the aisle, they do their best to give same-day service.

Employment:

Wal-Mart offers many different areas of opportunity for employment. Whether you are looking for a position at a store location, Sam's Club, or distribution center, there is a position for nearly everyone. It does not matter whether you are a Pharmacist, Optometrist, Corporate professional, or a Truck Driver. There is a position for you.

Wal-Mart offers their associates many different benefits and I will touch on only a few of them, because the list goes on and on. They offer a comprehensive medical plan, dental insurance, company paid life insurance, and business travel accident insurance. They offer "Resources For Living," which is a counseling and health information service that is free for all employees. You are able to plan for retirement with an Associate Stock Purchase Plan, where the company matches the first 15 percent, or up to the first ,800 per year. You also have a Retirement Account Rollover (401k) available to you to meet your retirement saving needs.

As you can see, Wal-Mart is a terrific company to work for, and offers many positions and benefits for the retail oriented individual. Although, I need to warn you. Having worked in retail myself, a life in this industry can prove to be very difficult in many challenging ways.

As always, I wish you success in your search for your dream job.
