VoIP Applications

VoIP technology, which stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol, is a means of making telephone calls over the internet.  Original telephone technology is analog and carries a voice signal by continuously varying an electrical current.  VoIP is different in that your voice is digitized into small digital files called packets, send over the internet, and then reconverted back into sound at the other end of the call.  The advantage of VoIP is that these packets are in the same format as other things sent over the internet like web pages and downloaded MP3 songs.  This means that it looks like any other internet information and can be sent very cheaply.

A variety of VoIP applications are available that allow you to make phone calls from your computer.  Some of these software programs even allow you to make free phone calls from your computer to another computer.  In many cases, it costs money to make a call from your computer to a phone but these rates are almost always dramatically cheaper than the same call being made through a long distance carrier.

Many people with family or friends in other countries almost exclusively using VoIP applications to talk with them now since the costs are so dramatically reduced compared to previous alternatives.  Many people choose to buy a headset which includes a speaker and a microphone which makes a phone call made from a computer feel just like a normal telephone call.  Keep in mind that the rates to call foreign mobile phones are usually much steeper than calling land lines in foreign countries.
