Job Applications - How to Write Effective Selection Criteria Statements

Selection Criteria are statements that employers, particularly government agencies request job seekers submit with their applications to demonstrate the scope and depth of their skills, experience and knowledge in relation to a specific personal attribute or competency. Listed below are examples of typical selection criteria:

Tertiary qualification in a relevant field, or equivalent experience Proven track record in contract management and administration Demonstrated experience in budget management and reporting Ability to work in a high performance team Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills conducive to respectful dealings (including active listening) with colleagues, board executives, managers and direct reports.

ONLINE APPLICATION

A three part structure is recommended for selection criteria responses - Positive Opening, Scoping Statement and 2 or more Examples.

The benefits of using this strategy include
being a guide for job applicants to include all the best and most relevant information from their work history relating to a specific skill recommending the best structure, presentation and format for each section, and providing a practical tool to generate the most concise, effective, comprehensive and supported statement of competency or skill guaranteed to impress any employer.

NOTE: Many employers restrict the length of selection criteria responses to a page, or sometimes specify 250, 500, 800 or 100 word or equivalent character limits. Always check the entire 'Application Information Package' to see whether there is a restriction before you start composing your responses. However, for the first drafts ignore this requirement, it only becomes important during the editing phase. All energy for the first draft should be focussed on creating and generating ideas for content. Direct your critical internal editor to take an extended coffee break until summoned.

POSITIVE OPENING
The first one or two sentences of your selection criteria response should be a positive statement that immediately links you with the desired skill, experience or knowledge. If you have been acknowledged for past performance, this is your opportunity to show perspective employers how you have used the targeted skill in a work situation to achieve good results.

Opening Examples
Teamwork- For the last 10-years my role as a Team Leader has required me to work collaboratively and productively with multi-disciplinary teams to produce project deliverables on time and within budget. This has enhanced our company's reputation for being a market leader in project management. Client Service Delivery - My experience in client services has involved both face-to-face and call centre work environments across a number of industries including telecommunications, hospitality, insurance and banking. My employers have acknowledged my competencies and results through multiple Client Service awards recognising both individual and team performances. Organisation - The majority of my employment has required using my organising and prioritising skills to manage large volumes of work with competing critical deadlines in order to meet strict compliance requirements as well as client imperatives. Financial Management Reporting - The aim of all financial management reporting is to be confident that the output is comprehensive and clearly indicates the financial situation of the organization and its component functional/operation units. I have consistently been able to deliver financial management reports on that have been fully aligned with each of my employing organisation's strategic goals, amply supported with evidence that either validates current initiatives or provides recommendations for a commercially viable way forward.
SCOPING STATEMENT
A scoping statement teases out the components of each skill area, providing an overview designed to demonstrate to employers you understand the dimensions of each attribute, preferably supported with short examples. This section should be no more than one or two paragraphs in length. It can be formatted either in dot point form or as a statement and may contain the following information
a list of skill types e.g.communication types include interpersonal, presentation, liaison, negotiation, written, etc. a competency listing, e.g. demonstrate functions you routinely use in MS Word, such as create table of contents, bibliographies, flow and organisational charts, mail merge, etc. an outline of your method, process, procedure, 'how to' approach or way of doing something e.g. problem solving, handling client inquiries or managing a poorly performing team member.
Scoping Examples
Meet Deadlines - I use a series of 'To Do' lists which is constantly reprioritized throughout the day as circumstances, operational and service demands change. I use a diary and/or desktop computer system to track daily, weekly, monthly and longer term tasks, plans and projects. I generally use periodic check lists to ensure certain tasks are completed on time. In addition, I maintain a neat and tidy desk area and make full use of lists, information retrieval systems, document trays and folders to organise my physical environment. Accuracy and Attention to Detail - With over 4-years experience in managing data collections I have developed a keen eye, proven strategies and a methodical approach that enables me to readily detect information and data anomalies. In spreadsheets I always cross reference my calculations to ensure that the rows and the columns of a set of figures verify the same total figure. I employ in every spreadsheet self checking mechanisms that will highlight errors the moment that a stray finger makes them. Clear and Concise Written Communication Style - My experience in written communication extends to targeting specific groups across diverse audiences - clients, team members, supervisors, committees and professionals. I take great pride that all my documents are factual, easy to read, grammatically correct, error free and professionally presented. I have extensive experience in generating business correspondence as well as performing on a daily basis a wide range of document tasks such as writing, drafting, collaborating with, contributing to and editing policies, procedures, proposals, business cases, project management plans, marketing collateral, data collection forms, surveys and newsletters. Experience in using Spreadsheets - On a daily basis I use MS Excel for recording, analysing and generating reports. I am highly proficient in importing data into and out of Excel spreadsheets. I am able to generate graphs, simple front end forms, paste-link functions, and many of the data manipulation (transcribe) and statistical functions (sum, average). My proficiencies extend to presentation and printing of Excel worksheets to facilitate the ease of reading and interpretation of data. Any work that requires comparative analysis on costings for venues and set up of budgets, as well as the monitoring of expenses is performed in MS Excel.
RELEVANT EMPLOYMENT EXAMPLES
The last and most critical section of a selection criteria response is to provide at least two examples from your work history to demonstrate where and how you have used the desired skill in a work situation to achieve an intended outcome. My recommendation is to take 2 or 3 positions from your work history, using a company name as the header and provide your experience in a narrative style, and include who, what, where, when, how and why along with a statement of achievement. The examples should be written so they create a picture in the mind of the reader thereby overcoming any impediment associated with prospective employers' lack of familiarity regarding your industry, company, position, project, role responsibilities, activities or discrete tasks.

Employment Examples

Company A Since July 2008 as the Accounting Manager my role has been to receipt and review all processes and systems leading to the monthly consolidation of the company's Group accounts. A key accountability is to ensure a strict adherence to financial data accuracy, consistency in treatment of accounts and reporting standards across numerous projects administered by multiple financial reporting units and involving billions of dollars. I use a number of comparative methodologies to verify accuracy and completeness of submitted accounts before consolidating them into Group financial statements. My role requires demonstrating leadership and the training of financial and accounting staff in head office and subsidiary offices to ensure they deliver their components of key strategic Group financial reports by the scheduled due dates. Our dynamic and highly competitive business environment often requires the Board and Executive Management to request a specific configuration of the Group's financial data in order to provide information that comprehensively guides, directs and supports strategic planning initiatives. A significant challenge for special reports is to ensure expenses and revenues correctly relate to their associated activities, receive the same consistent treatment and are aligned with the organisation's budget forecast to ensure comparability.
Company B As a Clinic Booking Officer in the 2009 National Oral Health Survey Project, I performed in a high volume, pressured and deadline dependent work environment. My role required the planning, organising and scheduling of dental examination clinics for six teams operating across the state. Each team was required to handle up to 30 patients per examination day. My tasks included contacting patients to secure a minimum number of appointments before confirming no later than two weeks prior that a scheduled clinic day was approved to go ahead. For the duration of the 3-month project, not only did I achieve the booking target for every scheduled clinic (no clinic was cancelled), but my contribution lead to our state being acknowledged as the project's Best Performer for the highest service volume and the quality of results.

Even for a professional writing selection criteria responses can be hard work. It is strongly recommended that the moment you identify a position requiring preparation of selection criteria you START IMMEDIATELY by quickly setting up a draft document using the selection criteria as headings and temporary subheading titles of 'Opening', 'Scope' and 'Examples' to guide you in the initial placement of content. In the first few sessions concentrate only on setting up the framework and filling in with rough notes or outlines of suitable information as it comes to mind. Strive to stay creative and avoid going into edit mode. You will have plenty to editing to do as the application deadline draws closer.

When you run out of energy, focus, concentration or fail to make any progress, it is more productive to WALK AWAY, leave it for a day, and resume when refreshed and able to sustain an objective viewpoint. Starting sooner, means you can give yourself the luxury and gift of time to create, edit and conduct multiple reviews to enhance the quality and presentation of your application before submission.

Where To Find Online Job Applications

Many times skilled individuals spend months on the unemployment list simply because they do not know where to find or how to fill out a job application. In recent years, the Internet has become a useful tool for people looking for work. The web offers many job opportunities in fields that are specific to individual skills, and several places online provide them for individuals wanting to be hired for the best job possible. Many of these sites also aim to educate individuals on how to fill out an online job application properly and successfully so that nothing will stand in the way of them finding the job they have always wanted.

One of the most popular accredited sites on the Internet, About.com, has created a search engine specifically designed to help people to find them online. Jobsearch.about.com is one of the best places to search for job applications. The site has many resources that allow individuals to fill out applications right on the Internet. They also include samples and templates of successful applications to show people the correct form so that finding a job will be even easier. The site has several articles posted by experienced professionals that help address any questions and concerns related to completing an application. One of the most helpful tools offered there is a guide to writing a successful resume, which gives individuals a better chance at being hired. Most importantly, the site offers government sponsored applications, proving its legitimacy and recommendation from the Better Business Bureau.

ONLINE APPLICATION

In addition to search engines, many well-known and respected businesses are now allowing applicants to apply for work online. Corporations, government jobs, and even teaching positions can now be applied for right on the Internet. Many states have also established sites that allow individuals to search for work in various fields in the state of their choice. Some states that have jumped on the online application bandwagon are California, Ohio, Colorado, and South Carolina. FindLegalForms.com is a great site that lists various applications according to state and job market, allowing individuals to find an application in the field and destination that is best for them. This site offers the convenience of searching several states on one site rather than looking for particular states all over the web. Each website is sponsored by its state government and provides several types of applications to choose from. Many sites also offer the option of printing the forms to be mailed or simply submitting them online.

Although some sites include examples of how to fill out a job application properly, it is a good idea to research how to do this before beginning the process. Nhlink.net is a good site to check out that provides examples of various types of jobs for individuals to study before filling out their own. They also offer a training link that offers advice and step-by-step instructions for filling out job applications. The site even has special sections on applying for internships and volunteer positions.

This is one of the first things an employer sees when searching for a new employee. If the applications are filled out incorrectly or carelessly, the individual applying for the position could be overlooked even if they are highly qualified for the position. Many times people do not know the proper procedures for filling out applications, and they have a hard time finding work for that reason. If individuals do the proper amount of research and complete applications with deliberation, they will have a major leg up on the competition and be hired in no time.

Software Applications

Software applications are increasingly evident and crucial in so many aspects of everyday life that many of us would have a hard time getting through a typical day without the use of some of them. Whether they are on a PC, a Mac, or most recently, on our cell phones, these software applications have drastically changed the way that many of us live our lives at home, on the go, and in the office.

Microsoft is world renowned as being one of, if not the best software companies in the world. Their Office suite of products includes software for word processing, spreadsheets, email and calendar tools, and presentations. Word and Excel are two of the most widely used and universally acceptable programs within the business world, and often time, are a required skill set for individuals looking to land a position within a company. These applications have revolutionized the way that we track, analyze, present, and share information with both internal and external customers.

ONLINE APPLICATION

Blogging has become an increasingly popular way for people to share their opinions and discuss just about anything that is one their minds. Applications have been developed specifically to assist with this new style of information sharing, such as Windows Live Writer and BlogJet. This software can prove to be invaluable to its users by providing them with the ability to create blog posts offline and makes the addition of files, YouTube videos, and images exceptionally easy. Spell checking and auto replace can also be run before transferring your completed work to the blog post of your choosing.

Another task that has become a seeming necessity to many is the ability to burn copies of CDs and DVDs from our computers. Applications such as Nero and CDBurnerXP have taken much of the guesswork out of these tasks and simplified the process to the push of a few buttons. Creating high quality CDs, DVDS, and even HD DVDs has become a reality for many users that possess little to no technical skill.

Instant messenger applications have helped to address our growing need for immediate gratification. There are no shortages of quality applications that provide this service, but one of the user-friendliest apps for communication with networked computers is Softros LAN Messenger. It provides all of the necessary features of an instant messaging program without some of the frivolous features, such as emoticons, which may be frowned upon in a professional environment.

Users of the popular Apple iPhone have been blessed with an ever-expanding library of software applications that can do just about anything. The Tweetie 2 application allows users to manage multiple Twitter accounts, translate foreign tweets, and connects Twitter followers to your address book contacts, right in the palm of your hand. The Yelp application connects to reviews of bars, restaurants, and other business and can provide a realistic, digital view of nearby establishments simply by pointing the viewfinder in its direction.

Good, bad or indifferent, software applications have become as much a necessity in our lives as food, oxygen and water.

How E-commerce Applications Are Helpful in Business

In the present situation of market, e-commerce stores have become the necessity and an indispensable part in the course. Since, your e-commerce website is exposed to the millions of people at a single click, thereof, the chances are high that it is able to generate huge profits.

It has been estimated that in the next few years, there would remain almost no physical storefront that does not have a virtual store. Obviously, this is because of the availability of the various application available for developing e-commerce sites.

ONLINE APPLICATION

Here, in the wake of the ongoing success of such e-commerce applications that are giving a new dimension to the businesses, we would like to provide you with a brief on how it has been possible:

1. We have a number of options available where there exists an already prepared e-commerce site, such as Amazon, eBay, and MSN Shopping, where the selling starts by just creating an account and putting your products and services. There is no doubt that it is easy to implement, and easy to put products and services in a minimal amount of time. On the other hand, it offers less flexibility, and your are required to give a percentage of your sales.

2. Another application is the option of the packaged sites, or in other words, template e-commerce application that purchases an e-commerce solution, and customise the website according to the needs and requirements of the project, by the help of the CMS available in the online industry.
And, these CMSs give the liberty to the non-tech savvy the ability to modify, edit and make changes whenever they feel the need. These packaged solutions are easy to implement, with a considerable assistance from the development companies. The advantage that it provides the branding before handed, which is generally no available in the already developed sites as mentioned above.

3. Custom developed solutions are the need of the hour. As the name goes by, all the features that are essential in an e-commerce store such as, user interface, product catalog, the secured checkout and order process, and the multiple payment options, and many such features that are developed keeping in mind your needs and requirements of the business. The company that offers you the custom based solutions would offer you fair enough SEO practices that gives you visibility in the search engines. No doubt, they are comparatively expensive but help your e-commerce site- a sure shot asset to your business in the long run.

However, a good web designing and development company would provide you with the tailor made solutions to all your business requirements and that would help you in the long run because they provide you with the latest technology and application that are available in the market along a place in the search engines, which is the most difficult to attain.

Social Security Numbers For Online Job Applications

As a Consultant I am constantly looking for my next contract assignment. Almost all of my job applications are filled out online. On rare occasion I will be asked for my social security number. If a company asks me to provide them with my SS number in order to apply for a job I question whether I want to work for that organization. As a Human Resource professional I am aware that the social security number is required to conduct a background check however no background check should be run until both parties show mutual interest with a strong possibility of a job offer being imminent.

Today I applied for a job with a health care organization in St. Louis, MO and they asked for my social security number when I filled out their online application. I entered: 000-00-0000 but the system wouldn't accept it. The system required that I enter a valid number so I tried 000-00-1111 but it wouldn't accept that number either. There is no reason this company should have that information up front. I will not entrust my SS number with total strangers online. What if their site is hacked? What if they run my background check without my knowledge?

ONLINE APPLICATION

I did a little research and discovered that back in the 1960's Woolworth's used to have social security #'s on their wallet inserts. The number they used was 078-05-1120 as a result the Social Security Administration has voided this number. Try using this number 078-05-1120 if they system will not accept your entry of 999-99-9999 or 000-00-0000. I highly recommend not providing your social security number or date of birth on any online job application.

If the Health Care organization in St. Louis, MO ends up hiring me I will recommend that they revise their online application process. As a Recruiter I would have a very difficult time persuading any future candidates to go through the online application process that requires them to include their social security number.

Water Cutting Table Vs Air Down-Draft Cutting Table for CNC Plasma Applications

When configuring a plasma cutting system, people often struggle with the decision of choosing between a water cutting table and an air down-draft cutting table. While both styles of table are effective, each has its advantages and disadvantages. Before making your decision, you must take into consideration and evaluate the types of materials you will be cutting, size of parts, the specifics of your application, and the short- and long-term costs associated with each type of table.

PRICE: The first thing that most people look at when choosing their cutting table is the significant difference in the up-front cost between a water table and an air down-draft table. Water tables are simply much less expensive. If price is the only consideration, then the decision is an easy one, choose the water table. The more important and often overlooked factor when making this decision is the long-term cost of each system. Long-term costs include maintenance, waste disposal, operational efficiencies, and other factors that will be outlined later in this article.

ONLINE APPLICATION

There are also cost issues to consider within these two categories of cutting tables. Water tables are available in fixed water level and adjustable water level configurations. Evaluation of your process will determine whether you need a fixed water level table or the ability to adjust the water level of the table. Likewise, air down-draft tables are available as a regular down-draft that draws air from the entire area of the table or as zoned down-draft tables that have dampers so that you are only drawing air from the area in which you are cutting. A zoned down-draft table is more expensive, but allows you to use a smaller, less expensive dust collector because the air volume requirements can be significantly less.

MATERIALS: The types of materials you will be cutting are important in this decision making process. If you are cutting primarily steel/stainless steel, either type of table will work well for you. However, if you are cutting aluminum, water tables can present a major safety hazard. When plasma cutting aluminum over a water table, the dross falling into the water produced by the cutting process will create a chemical reaction with the water. This chemical reaction will extract Hydrogen out of the water that will accumulate in pockets under the plates or in the bladder of adjustable level water tables, creating an explosion hazard.

The pockets of Hydrogen that accumulate under the plate will usually just produce "popping" sounds as they are ignited and are usually not large enough to cause a significant explosion. Some users have added water circulation systems to prevent/minimize this condition. The greater hazard is the accumulation of Hydrogen in the bladder of an adjustable water level cutting table. Adjustable level water tables basically have an inverted open-top box in them that is filled with air to raise the water level and emptied of air to lower the water level. If Hydrogen accumulates in the bladder and is ignited, it will produce a major explosion. These explosions have blown the gantries off of machines and severely injured and/or killed people in the vicinity of the machine. Manufacturers do not approve of and highly discourages any cutting of aluminum over a water table.

MAINTENANCE: The long-term cost of maintaining water tables versus air down-draft tables is a significant and often overlooked topic in the decision making process. All cutting tables accumulate scrap and slag and need to be cleaned out on a regular basis. Most users will have to do this at least once or twice per year, and heavy users may have to do this four or more times per year. In addition, water tables have a tendency to produce unpleasant odors over time as bacteria grows. With the ever increasing regulations and restrictions of waste water disposal, this cost is increasing every year. When you consider that a typical 8'x12' cutting table holds approximately 1,500 gallons of water, or a typical 10'x20' cutting table holds approximately 3,000 gallons of water, the water disposal costs can add up quickly.

An air down-draft system will require periodic emptying of particulate from the dust collection system, removal of slag/dross from the cutting table (slag pans can be added to make this process even easier), and occasional replacement of filters. There are no special waste disposal costs associated with this regular maintenance, and machine down-time is also typically less.

OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCIES: There are a number of factors to consider from an operational side when comparing water tables and air down-draft tables. These factors include the size and type of parts you are cutting, plasma performance, and cut quality.

The size and types of parts you are cutting may be a determining factor in this decision making process. Companies that cut many small parts that would have a tendency to fall through the slats and into the table should strongly consider an air down-draft system. This will allow your operators to quickly retrieve parts from inside the table, reducing the need to "fish around" for parts in murky water, and minimize "lost" parts. If you are cutting very long parts where straightness is an issue, a water table may be better suited for your application. By partially submersing or "floating" the plate you are cutting, the cooling effect of the water will help stabilize the temperature of the plate and minimize camber and/or warping.

For many years, the major plasma manufacturers have discouraged cutting over water. They claimed that cutting over water reduces their plasma capacity by as much as 20%, and reduced cut quality. In our customers' experience, setting the water level just below the level of the plate or partially submerging the plate does not have a noticeable impact on performance, cut quality, or consumable life. Cutting with the plate under water can cause problems with consumable life as the cutting torches are not designed to be submerged and coolant coming into contact with the electrodes can cause them to fail prematurely and possibly clog the air/gas nozzles creating problems with cut quality.

Cut quality between parts produced over either type of table has been fairly comparable. The biggest difference is that more dross adheres to the back of parts cut over a water table because the dross cools faster and sticks to the part as opposed to being blown down into the table. The "dross-free" rating by the plasma manufacturers is reduced when cutting over water. This dross/slag is not difficult to remove, but does add time/labor to the processing of parts.

SUMMARY: In order to select the best table for your application, it is important to take all of these factors into consideration. Spending the time to evaluate your processes and long-term costs now, will assure that you select the best, most cost effective solution to your particular application for now as well as for the future. Your plasma cutting system manufacturer can help you evaluate all of these factors and assist you in the decision making process.

Mobile Applications And Its Future Trends

Mobile applications are in great demand today. Most operating systems have come up with their own app stores and have revved up competition too.

Research giant Gartner published in the recent report that in the coming trends for mobile applications, money transfer would top the list of priorities while others were Mobile Payment, Near Field Communication and Location based Services. Mobile Search followed soon after followed by Mobile Internet and browsing, Health checkup through mobile, Advertising, SMS and instant messaging and music. There are trends related search engine optimization which are backed up by some other reports as an identifiable trend with marketers. Over the years, the picture of the mobile market is going to change drastically as virtually mobiles nowadays sport dual core processors as hardware which came up just 2-3 years back for laptops!

ONLINE APPLICATION

Mobile to enterprise software is also a good trend which will come up drastically, as mobile workers seek to sync their sales orders with enterprise ERP systems. Most product companies who provide CMS or other applications also feature a version which is compatible with a smartphone. Emails are probably the most popular applications today in a mobile. A new class of apps is in the reckoning which will be compatible and connected with ERP to CRM solution to HR modules.

Mobile devices are nowadays morphed using cloud and virtualization. A single device will soon be used as a mobile phone, still/video camera, credit card, location device, gaming device, music player etc. Cloud infrastructure coupled with virtualization is necessary for morphing. Form factor is also needed.

Mobile games are also in demand and there are many types of games coming up and will become more and more complex and chances are that there would be many multiplayer games being played by many people in real time. Mobile personal assistants are PDAs in a new avatar. There would be multiple digital interfaces, and diverse security mechanisms. Chances are that it would be very difficult to remember and manage so many disparate set of systems. A new class of mobile applications will come and go every month and there would be different concepts in play too.

A mobile grid and cloud will be available for futuristic applications, for sure as most of the companies are moving towards the cloud. There are different communities now based on the cloud. Companies are sure to leverage the processing, memory as well as bandwidth or other requirements.

What Are Some Examples of Web 2.0 Applications?

Proponents of Web 2.0 are very clear that this concept is not something that will come to pass in the future, but is a phenomenon that is already among us. To that end, supporters of the concept of Web 2.0 readily point to online sites and applications that already employ factors that are understood to define this second generation of web use. Here are some commonly cited examples of Web 2.0 applications for you to consider.

At the lower rungs of these types of applications rest those functions that can function in an offline environment, but provide added features when operated in an online environment. One common example of this type of second-generation application are a number of the electronic games we all enjoy. While it is possible to purchase the games on disk and play them without an Internet connection, many also come with the option to go online and enjoy additional features with the games if desired.

ONLINE APPLICATION

Another example of these basic types of applications would be retail sites that function in both a virtual and a physical mode. Many popular retail chains continue to build more physical locations, but at the same time have opted to allow users the chance to place orders in an online environment. In some instances, there is even the option of either having the order sent through the mail or filled and held at the closest physical location. In other words, you can place the order online, have it sent to your local store, and then pick it up in a day or two, without the need to go through the hassle of making a prolonged shopping expedition.

A little higher in the food chain of Web 2.0 applications are those types of programs that allow for quick and easy access to a great deal of data. The online encyclopedias and glossaries that are equipped with search capabilities are an excellent example of this type of thing. Instead of having to rely on endless wading through electronic documents or going with an offline resource, these newer innovations help to make locating data much easier.

A third example of Web 2.0 applications have to do with quick and easy online commerce. Auction sites and stores that are set up specifically for online use fall into this category. These types of sites are accessible around the clock, function without using a great deal of resources on the user end, and in general expand shopping and buying opportunities significantly. Perhaps of all the type of applications that are classified as Web 2.0, these are among the most popular of all.

Turn Theories Into Practical Applications With A Psychology Course

It seems every time we turn around, a new career path is being created. If there is one thing all these options have in common is a conventional, simple college degree focusing on one key area is not enough. These interdisciplinary occupations are often a mixed bag, relying on two or more academic tracks; one usually as a major, the other as a minor. That being the case, those studying many of the humanities and business might want to consider psychology as their minor.

In its near 150 years of existence, one thing psychology has proven is it can be applied to just about every discipline involving a human being. At its core, it's a science that specializes in understanding such basic human factors as motivation, desire and human behavior in general. As such, it can be applied to everything - from those as ethereal as history or art appreciation, to as pragmatic as marketing, health care and criminal justice.

ONLINE APPLICATION

If anything, a professional armed with a psychology minor now has the tools to not only quantify how a person or group will do something, but also get into why that group or individual did it. This can provide an employer with invaluable data when it comes to everything from planning an advertising campaign to fighting crime.

One thing students will find is just how fascinating a field psychology can be. Yes, most everyone has heard of such historic contributors as Freud or Skinner, as well as the team of Masters and Johnson. On a more practical front, the concepts these various psychologists produced provide some illuminating philosophies on how the mind works.

One can pile up the reasons to consider courses in psychology. Fortunately, a student can test the waters pretty easily before making the jump. What that student can do is simply consult with their brick and mortar or online college's list of courses and take an Introduction to Psychology course as a free elective. If you like the class, and do well, then consult with your career counselor about making it a minor. If not, you filled a free elective class at the worst.

If you do decide to continue, recommended additional courses should include courses with titles like Analysis of Psychological Data, Behavior, Applied Psychology and Development. In all, most schools require one or two basic courses and three to four advanced, but that's another subject to discuss with your career counselor.

True, there is no study showing if people with psychology minors do earn more than those who don't have one. On the other hand, there's anecdotal data proving those with better-rounded degrees are becoming more desirable than those who concentrated on one field and one field only.

FBML Vs iFrame - Facebook Applications

FBML is a Facebook proprietary markup language, very similar to HTML which gives programmers a lot of existing visual controls used to make a user interface in a natural Facebook look. On another side iFrame applications are running in iFrame inside Facebook environment as any other web application with its own styles. However some Facebook features have to be made using FBML and because of this there is technology called XFBML to import mandatory visual features in iFrame applications.

Since FBML applications are much better connect with Facebook, visual FBML controls are drown much faster then for iFrame applications. However there are also some disadvantages which FBML applications have vs
iFrame applications and vice versa. Developer of Facebook application have to consider what are his requirement for application and decide which the better type for development.

ONLINE APPLICATION

FBML advantages

1. Faster load of visual controls
2. Complete set of controls available (some controls are available only for FBML apps)
3. Easier usage of controls
4. Developing in PHP programming model

FBML disadvantages

1. Dependency on Facebook
2. XFBML and HTML is an only allowed technology to use. No Java Script and Flash
3. Impossibility to run on local machine which make difficulty in development
4. Forcing unnatural programming style for some platform as ASP. NET and JSF Iframe advantages

1. Independence of Facebook, easier to transfer the app on another platform as MySpace and Bebo
2. All web technologies can be used
3. Can be developed on local machine and run from IDE
4. Easier to use from platform as ASP.NET and JSF
5. Compatible technology as for Facebook Connect web sites makes transferring of Facebook application to standalone Facebook Connect web site is much easier. iFrame disadvantages

1. Slower load of FBML controls using XFBML
2. Not all FBML controls are available

Decision of which type of application to choose is not an easy one. From my side smaller load and luck of some controls are much less drawbacks than impossibility to use JavaScript and Flash especial for games. Also big advantage is compatible technology with Facebook Connect web sites and possibility to run and debug from local machine.

Different Kinds of Applications Software

There are basically 3 different kinds of applications software I will focus on in this review. That is, entertainment, business and utility software. Below I provide an explanation, including examples of each.

Entertainment Software

ONLINE APPLICATION

This includes software that is basically used for entertainment purposes. You can get different kinds of applications software to develop software like games, do some TV/ and or remote recording and more. Some examples include PSTiVo, Windows XP Media centre but you have to get it on Windows Vista. These may require sound cards with digital audio.

Business Software

Sometimes known as productive software this is used mainly to run businesses. That is, to keep things functioning appropriately e.g. human resources, accounting, project management, inventory software etc.

This includes MS Office, Video Editing, HR Employer, Access Database, Quickbooks to name a few. You can get some free trial downloads online for different kinds of applications software used for business purposes.

Utility software

In general this is the group that is not so visible to us but it does one of the most important tasks. By utility I basically refer to tools. These tools are use to do the same job on PCs as screwdrivers and spanner do on a car or other mechanical things.

These include tools like registry tweakers, registry cleaners, performance monitors, which are available for checking and giving warnings about various system components like CPU speed memory, hard drives cooling systems and more.

Amongst different kinds of applications software in the utility group includes antivirus and spyware. Firewall can also be considered as utility software.

Ajax Applications Development

AJAX has not only sprouted but has got root hold in developing dynamic web applications, that reflects changes in micro seconds thereby saving reloading time, improving usability, providing faster accessibility, to more web pages in lesser time. AJAX, acronym for Asynchronous Javascript And XML is the term whispered from almost every software developer mind and its waves are touching the network boundaries.

Ajax Applications Development has provided breakthrough in web application development. AJAX is a new way to define technology shifting web pages from HTML static pages to advance Java script and CSS enabled dynamic pages. AJAX is also called a free framework for fast creation of interactive cross-platform web experiences. This application has transformed the look, feel of web and has solved the major problem of web application of reloading.

ONLINE APPLICATION

Conglomeration of many technologies to form a more useful, dynamic, stronger technology - AJAX has accelerated the web world. Ajax incorporates standards-based presentation using XHTML and CSS; dynamic display and interaction using Document Object Model; data interaction and manipulation using XML; asynchronous data retrieval using XMLHttpRequest and Java Script binding together everything. AJAX uses Java script technology, HTML pages make asynchronous call to the server from which it fetches information that may be formatted as HTML, plain text, XML or Java Script Object Notation (JSON). To modify the Document Object Model (DOM) of the HTML page java script uses this content. Load of content on demand for various complex web applications has improved bandwidth usage by cutting down bandwidth consumption for complex functionalities.

AJAX is based on different server side architecture to support interaction model. Intermediate application layer, an Ajax engine (written in java script), is added in between user and server that allows asynchronous user's interaction with application. This new approach has many benefits over static web applications, main features of AJAX include: Real-time form validation with server-side validation of codes. Auto-completion of form fields, better interaction and control with the use of advanced controls available. Content mix from third party application with your application is easily possible. Google Maps, Flickr, Orkut, Google Suggest are examples of AJAX application development.

Inspite of its myriad benefits, ajax application development is facing few major challenges: in-depth knowledge is required to understand upgrading Ajax functionality as it is not easy to develop Ajax that involves running complex java script code on client. Another challenge is that XMLHttpRequest object is not part of Java script technology specification, so it makes adaptablity difficult for older browsers. Even though browser add-ons have made debugging easy, processing logic embedded in client and on server makes application debugging difficult. Easy data access have provided easy way to plagiarism, except for restricted sections. Identifying particular state of application is difficult, this creates problem for user to bookmark specific application state. Also, iframe element used to populate browser history is not recommended by W3C. Websites using Ajax applications are generally not search engine friendly. Ajax has java script code that has compatibility problems with different browsers. Web analytics tracked records get cluttered with websites using Ajax technology as every event is tracked by analytics.

Careful consideration is required before implementing Ajax technology for your website to overcome few of its fallback.

Developing Facebook Applications

I've worked on several Facebook Applications since the beginning of the year and although none of them have been massively successful hits, I've learned a couple of things about developing Facebook Applications. Hopefully, I can share some of what I've learned and experienced. I'm not going to talk much about the technical development process but instead, more of the marketing and business aspects. I'm also going to try to not make broad assumptive conclusions based on my experiences but instead, share my experiences and give conclusions that I'm pretty confident in. Some of us are making applications because we want to share our great ideas with the world but, all of us would like to monetize our ideas--don't lie, you know you do. :)

Facebook launched their application platform in the middle of 2007 and it has done very well since. Thousands of people have made applications for it and some businesses have sprouted from it. I was generally cautious of the Facebook Platform and did not look into it until mid-January of 2008. As of today, I have four active Facebook Applications that were developed solely by me and one other that I worked on. My applications aren't drawing any significant number of daily active users--I don't even have an application that has 1000 installs yet. The total combined user base of all my applications probably falls in around 1500 - 2000 installs. It isn't impressive but, keep reading.

ONLINE APPLICATION

I haven't put much polish in my applications simply due to the fact that I don't know what the return on these applications are. My first app is just a Flash remake of Pong: Old School Tennis. There is no social or viral features to that application, I was just dipping my toes in the water. That application has around 200 installs which surprises me every day due to its utter lack of features but, I guess Pong is just a fun distraction. My second go at the platform delivered me my, arguably, most successful application so far: My Bookshelf. My Bookshelf still needs a lot of polish and feature additions. My vision for it was a lot more grand than what it currently is. The biggest difference between other applications like it is the shelf display that was done in Flash so it has a nice scrolling view. I've spent the most time developing My Bookshelf and it produces the most money in advertising revenue--it accounts for about 80% - 90% of my daily Facebook revenue through Social Media.

My fastest growing and most complete Facebook Application is FlipCup Challenge based on the drinking game of the same name--minus "Challenge". It has the social features that should be expected in a Facebook game like high scores amongst your friends, global high scores, challenges--hence the name--and the ability to invite your friends. FlipCup Challenge is growing at a faster rate than My Bookshelf but has not produced nearly as much revenue. While My Bookshelf suffers from a very poor retention rate--I believe due to its lack of polish--FlipCup does a very good job keeping users who have installed it. This leads me to believe that a certain level of polish is indeed necessary even though games like Zombies were pretty rudimentry and managed to attract millions of installs. The landscape for Facebook Applications is changing and developers are going to have to make more sophisticated applications in order to compete as the platform grows and matures.

The last of my personal applications is Sam's Solitaire. It is a simple solitaire game based solely on Windows's version of solitaire that everyone who runs Windows will have. It took me about a week to make it, working just a couple hours a day--I happen to have a full-time job as well. This application is quite generic except for the fact that I made it for a girl who plays quite a bit of solitaire on her phone--that must be a first, Facebook Application as a gift. So this application has a differentiating personality and a basic social feature that tells you how fast your friends have finished a game of Sam's Solitaire. None of my applications have been active for more than 6 months with Sam's Solitaire being active for less than two weeks.

The last application that I will talk about is Sheep Tycoon. It has the production polish because we developed it as professionals at Tiny Mantis Entertainment--an independent game company. This Facebook edition of Sheep Tycoon is a simplified version of a bigger game that we have been trying to find the funds to produce. The game on Facebook is relatively simple. The goal is to get the highest score possible by milking sheep and then turning the milk into butter, cheese, or leave it as is and bring it to one of the two waiting donkey's to be delivered to town--I happen to hold the second highest score as of this writing. Although Sheep Tycoon is a very pretty game, it doesn't have the same polish in social features. It is also a lot more original than any of the applications that I have made so it is difficult to gauge if such a game would appeal to the Facebook audience.

I've searched the web for Facebook marketing techniques and I have not found any definitive information. It appears to me that everyone is still trying to figure out how to tap the potential of the Facebook Platform. One technique that I've written about, viral loops, is something that I believe can be applied to Facebook. Some apps already have used this technique without even knowing it and some appear to be deliberately doing it but in uncreative and possibly annoying ways.

The main point that I've come away with in the last six months working with the Facebook Platform to develop viable business models is that an application's ability to generate revenue has more to do with how long a user stays in your application than it does with how many total installs or daily active users you have. Obviously, if there are a lot of installs and a lot of daily active users, there will be a certain amount of revenue that can be garnered from it but, that is just a law of numbers. To maximize the revenue potential of each user is to keep them in the application. Applications also need to have a certain level of polish to them or it will just be lost in the mix. The amount of applications on Facebook is growing everyday so having a unique selling point will eventually become crucial.

I have application ideas sitting in my Developer application--some of which are half finished apps. Some of them will probably never see the light of day either due to its complexity--my procrastination--or just better ideas skipping in line. We have a big application designed for Facebook at Tiny Mantis that we are trying to get funding for. We believe that this application will expand the definition of "social games"--which is a hot sector in the application market. I'm sure I am a little biased--I had a hand in its inception--but, if you are looking to fund social games, let us know.

Revenue being generated from advertising is probably not the best route for a truly sustainable or highly profitable model. I believe micro-transactions is way to go and Facebook is supposed to be working on a system for that. There is a great deal of potential in the Facebook Platform and I will continue to find ways to unlock it--along with the thousands of other developers, venture capitalists, and business people. Hopefully, I've provided some insights through my experiences. Maybe I'll have some more in the next six months. Until then, see you on Facebook.

Medical Applications of Lasers

Different kinds of lasers have different uses when in comes to the field of medicine, the convenience and ease that these gadgets provide are a definite leap when it comes to the advancement of healing, surgery and cure.

A common incorrect notion is that basic high power green lasers have the application for healing or treating small cuts and notch. The fact is, if the laser is powerful enough, the only thing it can do is cauterize if not bum it, this actually reduces the possibility of infection but when it bums the area, there could be more harm than good that it can do.

ONLINE APPLICATION

Now another wonder in the field of lasers is that infrared laser pointers provide advancement in the treatment of soft tissue injuries like bruises and strains which can be called bio-stimulation. With bio-stimulation, infrared lasers are able to penetrate below the skin and vitalize cellls which enhances the process of microcirculation, inflammation, immune response and reduction of pain.

These are a few of the new breakthroughs that has touched the field of lasers:

Surgery: Back in the day, when the word surgery is mentioned, the first thing that comes into mind is the shiny stainless blade cutting through the skin, but nowadays lasers provide a bloodless and germ free wound when it penetrates through the skin. The total and highly accepted accepted of lasers in surgery is that it dramatically reduces if not irradicates the risk for infection thus speeding up the process of healing.

Tattoo Removal: There was a time when the average joe who would have his tattoo removed would suffer the scarring and loss of the skin's integrity. Thanks to the new technology that these lasers provide, pulsed versions provide short but intense burst of lights through the skin that goes to the pigment of the tattoo. In the process the pigment is broken down and removed naturally through the use of the body's immune system. Tattoo removal has never been these easy, it removes the tediousness of the process and better yet, you would know that when you decide to remove or change your tattoo, your skin would stay scar-free, intact and healthy.

Acne: Pimples or acne is 30% fat in composition, therefore when fat is removed, there is a big possibility of acne reduction. Lasers can break down the specific chemical bonds in the fat that is found in acne, these process allows the body to absorb that fat that has been broken down.

Laser Acupuncture: These eastern alternative form of medicine has a lot of benefits to the human body, yet to some, the thought of having your body pierced by needles just doesn't cut it and sometimes becomes a scary rather than a healing experience. Lasers give a non invasive method to practice these eastern form of alternative medicine. What lasers do is that it stimulates acupuncture pressure points in soft tissue injuries and provides pain relief for acute and chronic pain.

Cancer: Although a lot of controversy has risen when it comes to the benefits of lasers, doctors and medical practitioners alike claimed the many significant progress that lasers contribute to the treatment of cancer specially in areas where conventional medicine and methods have proven futile. As of the moment researches has yet to be explored to further support the claims of benefit that these lasers provide.

Why Free Software Shouldn't Worry About Proprietary Mobile Phone Applications

Many with the free software philosophy, using software that gives the end user freedom versus just being a free product, are a bit concerned about open source platforms that are becoming popular like Android. The concern is that while the platform is open, the applications that sit on top of it are mostly paid, commercial products. Free software is starting to win on the platform level on mobile devices but is potentially losing on the application side. Some have started to worry.

The reality is that there isn't a need to worry. At this point in time the way things are right now is because of how software development works. The companies with the capital to develop software for new platforms like Android are going to do it first. They can take the money and hire the talent needed to make applications. Some of these companies will get a return on investment while many of them will fail in their efforts.

ONLINE APPLICATION

What this process does for free software is show what applications are actually needed by the end users. Those who program and believe in free software can start making applications that perform the same functions. Eventually people will find it silly to pay for an application where there is a free alternative that does many of the exact same functions.

The problem is that many in the free software movement have expected that free and open platforms would only have free and open applications. The reality is that there will always be a hybrid because there is money to be made when a platform opens a company up to millions of new customers. Paid software is not something to be feared. Instead of being mad, frustrated, or scared, use successful paid software as a model to know what the average user really wants to develop open source projects that will help users long term.
